Plate 227 COMMON (BLACK-TAILED) MAGPIE, 2nd or later edition Octavo
The 2nd and later Octavo Editions, called THE BIRDS OF AMERICA from Drawings Made in the United States and its Territories, was published in seven volumes from 1856, after Audubon's death, onward to about 1871. Unlike the 1st edition, which were hand colored, the 2nd and later editions had some color printing and some hand coloring. Additionally, the text at the bottom left and right will only be block and a different font than 1st edition block font The plates, measure approximately 10.5" x 6.5". They bear the same legend as the Havell edition except that in the lower right-hand corner, J.T. Bowen or other later printers are shown as the lithographer.
