Jennifer Anderson
Jennifer L. Anderson is a fine artist, working in the disciplines of printmaking, watercolors and oil painting. Her iconic and evocative imagery arises from her experiences as a woman and a mother as well as her love of the natural world.
Anderson was born in Ware, Massachusetts and raised on a farm in North Brookfield. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Connecticut in 1989, she pursued graduate studies, exhibited throughout New England, and raised three children. She was awarded coveted residencies at the Vermont Studio Center (2007) at the KALA Art Institute in Berkeley (2010). That same year she was a presenter at Printopolis in Toronto, Canada.
Anderson says of her work:. “Art-making is my key to the secret garden, my journey through the looking glass; it provides never-ending possibilities of exploration and connection. Some imagery seems to be hard-wired into my soul, especially birds. I am captivated by their movements, their forms and the space they create with their actions.
Mark-making is a personal language, one that employs both intuition and physical energy. The meditative brushwork in painting and the scratches and textures that I carve and scrape in printmaking, have an emergent voice that speaks the narrative of the art. This allows for both continuity and reinterpretation from one unique image to another.
In our current world of high-tech, uber-fast everything, I create intimate work at a very slow pace. For me the art processes influence the creation as much as the content does. Each step to the final image involves the artist’s hand, with direct mark-making influencing the development of every image.”
Monterey, California, has been Anderson’s home for the past ten years. She continues to create her own work, exhibit widely, and teach art, book arts and printmaking to students of all ages. She is a current member of the California Society of Printmakers, Boston Printmakers, and was juried into the Carmel Art Association in 2015. Her works are held in public and private collections internationally.
